Beach Grove Elementary School

Life Long Learners

History

The area of Beach Grove was first planned as part of a development that included the Beach Grove Golf and Country Club in the 1930s. When the Depression came, the development failed and parcels of land were sold lot by lot. The school property was purchased from the Grauer farm.

Beach Grove Elementary School opened in 1967 as a satellite school to Boundary Bay Elementary, which was closed in 1981. There were classes from Kindergarten to Grade 4 at the school. Jim Poetker was the supervising Principal, as he was the principal at Boundary Bay. Roland Chapman was head teacher at the school.

The school was named Beach Grove as a result of a competition. Children at Boundary Bay voted from a variety of choices, including:

  • Sunshine Elementary
  • Stanley School
  • Grauer Grove
  • Beach Grove

The original part of the building consisted of four classrooms and the school has since expanded on three sides of the building. The school's exterior reconstruction and the gym's seismic upgrading was completed in 2003.

School principals have been Bill Wakefield, Gordon Joyner, Mike Wood, Della Henderson, Bruce Conley, Garry Gordon, Gerald Soon, Phil Cookson, Bonnie Nelmes and Rachael Corneil and Rick Hall appointed the school's most recent principal beginning in the 2016/2017 school year.
